Now that tourism is slowly coming back, motorcycle riders in UK can go across Europe and ride in some of the most scenic routes once again. One destination that is commonly chosen is France, specially the Alpine region and their gorgeous surrounding roads.
We were first astonished by the Apline region as a road trip route to try, after seeing a documentary of a new adult french website, called Le Bon porn, that documented a ride between a couple of actors that decided to go on a motorcycle ride when the quarantine period started in France. Riding their bike, filming some scenes and sleeping on their tents.
Alpine motorbike trip itinerary
Because a motorbike trip through the Alps can never be too much! No matter how many times you return to the grandiose mountain ranges that define the heart of Europe. There you will always find a new and stunning road to ride.
The Alpine region is the largest mountain range system in Europe, its highest point being Mont Blanc at over 4800m. They cross the borders of several countries and in each, their distinctive beauty calls for a great motorbike trip.
France, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Austria and Slovenia are blessed with the most alpine expanse, touring them by motorbike is our goal.
What does the Alpine region have to offer?
A journey by motorbike through the Alps is a multifaceted challenge through glaciers, snowy landscapes, lakes, lush forests, imposing summits, grand valleys and vertiginous mountain passes.
Always with the opportunity to settle down in one of the numerous and picturesque villages you will find there. Worthy of a tale, in every detail they are in perfect harmony with nature and its elements.
Each corner has its own charm, always alternated by the curvilinear roads that cross the mountains for kilometres, offering us a labyrinth worthy of traveling.
No matter in which direction you drive, in the Alpine region no kilometre will be wasted. Sometimes it is good to let the road lead us, and take us to meet places that exceed expectations and surprise by their existence.
However, a journey of such a dimension requires the obligatory passage through some places, leaving room for something to surprise us.
These are the curvy, vertiginous roads that take us by motorbike to the Alps. The Col’s, the Pass’s or the Alpenstrasses that we look for. This itinerary has been defined with the aim of covering many that you cannot miss!
How do we define the route of a motorbike trip to the Alps?
Spain and France distance us from any more distant place and crossing them will always be something to repeat. We know that in Spain, beautiful and wonderful landscapes exist. That a walk through the enchanted French plains offers days in beauty.
But the aim of this route focused on the Alpine region and as such, the crossing of these two countries was done on motorways and based on the maximum tolerable kilometres per day.
General idea of the route
Having arrived in the Swiss region, bordering Germany and Austria across the stunning Lake Constance, we were at the start of our goal. From there the alpine region awaited us, as did all the places we already had our eye on.
Travelling along the German road (Deutschland Alpenstrasse) at the foot of the Bavarian Alps, a hop on the Romantic Road on the route of the enchanted small towns and Louis II castles.
Visit the Salzburg region and the Austrian Tyrol towards the Julian Alps in Slovenia. Enter the Italian Alps via the famous Dolomites, drive the mythical Passo dello Stelvio in the Bormio region.
Head towards the Swiss Alps in the Andermatt region for the best high mountain passes in the country. From where, after a short crossing through the French Alps (which have so much to explore), we started the return home.
We do not underestimate the French Alps region! In other articles we will talk about it because it has its own special fascination and a lot to do.
In this specific itinerary it was not included to be part of our “walking mode” and was left for a next trip focusing on the Maritime Alps.
